The Library can house a total of about 60,000 books and bound journals. The diagram above shows the layout of the Library and the facilities offered.
The Collection
The HSS Library offers books and journals on Psychology, Sociology, Chinese, English literature, Social Sciences (general) and Humanities (general). Please note that the Economics collection remains in Library 2 due to the lack of space and the need to co-locate it with the Business collection.
Generally books with the following class numbers are located here – BL, DS, DF, GF, GN, H, HM, HN, HQ, HT, HV, PA, PJ, PK, PL, PN, PR, PS, PT, R, RA, RC. With the exception of the Chinese (CJK) collection, books in the HSS Library have a green dot on their spines.
Our collection in the main reading area is divided into 2 main sections
-English section subdivided into (1) Circulating collection, (2) Reference collection and (3) Bound periodicals -Chinese (CJK) section
Services
Reserve books (2-hour loan) for courses in Chinese studies, English literature, Psychology and Sociology are shelved near the entrance of the Library. Users can borrow books through the self-service check-out system and return them at the Loan & Information Desk. Please note that you may also return your books at any library. The computing area provides 16 network PCs for users to access e-journals, databases and other electronic resources. The usual Microsoft productivity suite (Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint) are also installed. Users can also access all the electronic network resources with their personal notebook PCs. The library is equipped for wireless access. Besides photocopying, users can also print lecture notes and online journal articles using network printing facilities. There is a team of seven professional staff managing the HSS Library.
